Vowels

Soft Sounds

a          e            i            o            u

英语元音有两个声音

English Vowels, like consonants have two sounds - we call it the children's sounds (short) and the grown up/adult sounds (long)- the important thing is that you know there are two basic sounds when you see the letter:

第一次

First - Long Sounds

A sounds like the 'ei' in hei 黑   -  for example: late ( 迟到)

E sounds like the 'i' in xi 西  -   for example: she/he  (她/他)

I  sounds like 'ai' 爱  -  for example: bite ( 咬)

O sounds lik the 'ou'  in 都  -   for example: boat ( 船)

U 是相同的第一次 u unite (联合)  - as in 鱼 (yu)

二次

Second - Short Sounds

a  hat  (帽子) - as in 安全 (an quan)

e  ten  (十) -  as in 很 (hen)

i   sing  (唱) - as in 名  (ming)

o  hot (热) - no equivalent sound in Chinese

u unite (联合)  - as in 鱼 (yu)

There are other sounds (English is all about exceptions to the rule). Do not worry about them, you will soon find them and learn what they are.

There is only ONE WAY to learn a new language

YOU HAVE TO SPEAK IT!!!

I (Graeme, Ed of Kaixin with Xiaosui) am a mature age adult and I have never been good a learning a language.

I studied online for 5 years and I knew a LOT about how to speak Chinese.

BUT, I could not speak it!

Then I met a wonderful woman who is to be my wife.

She spoke little English so I had to stumble through my rudimentary Chinese.

She is very very patient and I was soon speaking with some fluency. It was still simple Chinese and I am sure many of the tones are wrong, but she can understand.

I then realized that if I had done that from the very beginning I would be fluent by now.

You can't learn a language by just studying it.

You have to use it from the very beginning.

So don't waste 5 years like I did, start with an online tutor from eteacher and you will soon be speaking your new language fluently.

Chinese Students, the same applies to you. You will not learn English UNLESS you use it.
