Introduction to Chinese
Remember that a language is like music
In both language and music you must listen carefully for the rhythm and melody.
Music is a series of sounds and silences, yet we hear it as a continuous sound, each single sound resonating into the next. That is why it is difficult to understand a new language at first. As adults we learn individual words. Yet often, when a language is spoken freely, many of the words run together to make an incomprehensible single sound to the learner.
So, you must listen carefully for the notes within the melody. With time and patience, you will recognise them.
