Finding the Right Teacher

How does a child learn to speak and understand language? Repetition, Repetition, Repetition ..... combined with a dedicated full time teacher - mother.

A child is encouraged to try. Every success, no matter how small, is greeted with praise and encouragement.

As adults we will probably find that our mother does not want to teach us a second language.

So the first step is to find a good teacher. You can learn by yourself or with a teacher.

However, it is recommended that you learn with a teacher. Why?

1. You MUST learn with a native speaker of Chinese from China. You MUST use the language from the very beginning, just like a young child learning. Otherwise you risk knowing a lot about a language but not being able to speak or understand it being spoken.

2. Learning with an experienced teacher invariably saves you time, money and effort. An experienced teacher will be able to guide you through the maze and ensure that you do not waste time because you have not fully understood a concept.

3. Learning a language is like learning music. You could learn music yourself through reading books and experimenting, however, it is universally recognised that the best way to learn music is with an experienced teacher.  A musical instrument is learned from playing it from the very beginning, it can't be learned through reading a book. Imagine learning to play the piano from reading about it in a book. You play the piano from the first lesson. Many of the sounds are strange and wrong, but through guidance by an experienced teacher and practice you are soon making music. Language it just the same.

4. The Chinese language is resonant with meaning and culture. To fully understand a word you often need to understand the culture behind the word. ChinesePod gives you the culture behind the word.

Learn how to SPEAK CHINESE, don’t learn how to just study Chinese.
